India Hearts Beat

The lives of three women from different generations and cultures are woven together in an electronic tapestry. The narrative is performed by the artist who is of mixed-race background, her white mother, and a South Asian friend. Film footage shot in India is re-processed, creating a swift-moving current of images, and becoming a site of memory and imagination. A red sari creates a river of memories, where the women cleanse themselves with repetitive, ritualized gestures. This video, now a classsic of Canadian video art dealing with issues of race, works on both aesthetic and political level for a variety of audiences.
